Editor’s note: The following was written while listening to Jarrod Dicker’s favorite version of the Grateful Dead’s Dark Star—the song which he named his publication Dark Star DAO after. Feel free to listen along as you read. 🎧⚡️
Greetings from The Deep End!
We’re excited to be launching our companion Substack for the podcast.
Thank you for the warm reception (and hundreds of 5 star Apple Podcast reviews — more always appreciated 🙏) as we’ve launched the podcast. We’re excited to build this with you! One of the biggest pieces of feedback from listeners so far has been that you wish you could have show notes shared somewhere that is easier to access than inside the podcast apps. We’re excited to grant that wish with this Substack!
Beyond show notes and links, we’ll also be using this to make announcements about new initiatives and upcoming events—like this live podcast recording with Packy McCormick (ODF2) of Not Boring.
Without further ado, let’s dive in!

🎧 Episode 8: Web3 with Jarrod Dicker
Listen on Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Pocket Casts | YouTube (Audio)
Joining us this week in The Deep End is Jarrod Dicker (@jarroddicker), investor at the Chernin Group and former Washington Post executive.
In recent episodes of The Deep End, we spoke with…
Joe Albanese, CEO of Stir — we discussed the new tools being built to enable creators to reach their full potential. Apple | Spotify | YouTube (Audio)
Saagar Enjeti, co-host of Breaking Points — we explored what it's like to use those tools to build massively successful independent businesses as a creator. Apple | Spotify | YouTube (Audio)
Our conversation with Jarrod rounds out this trilogy. Today, we dive deep into how modern creators are driving the development of new applications and ushering us into a new era—the decentralized web, also referred to as Web3.
From making angel investments in cutting edge creator-focused companies like Stir and Mirror, to developing new media business models as the VP of Commercial at the Washington Post, Jarrod has a rare perspective on the creator economy that draws from both legacy institutions and new media.
Earlier this month, Jarrod was announced as a new investment partner at the Chernin Group, a firm whose portfolio includes Dapper Labs, Barstool Sports, The Athletic, and many more in the crypto and media industries. Today he shares his thoughts on the shifts we’re seeing with Web3 that will change the way we create and consume content.
Also available on Spotify, Pocket Casts, and YouTube (Audio)
Topics discussed include…
Benefits of building off of foundational trust of an institution and what other value they bring to individual creators.
Covid as an inflection point for people figuring out what was next—many becoming creators full-time for the first time.
The business of individuals and what that means for pre-existing institutions and brands.
How the fringe can become the next frontier.
Web2 is app’s first users second - users innovated within the structure. Web3 is the inverse - user behaviors and desires drive application.
How hip hop is always ahead of the curve compared to rock and roll.
How web3 impacts the people who won web2.
Web2 platforms are critical for Web3 - it’s where the marketing happens.
Web3 reputation is what you do. Web2 is marketing and broadcast.
Twitter as the great bridge from Web2 to Web3.
Web3 platforms as clubs (like Mirror).
How media is revolutionary but the business model has always been evolutionary - Web3 finally offers revolutionary media business models.
How local news could be transformed and revitalized by Web3.
How for creators, “diversification is your only revenue strategy.”

🧬 Just Launched — On Deck Longevity Biotech Fellowship
Knowledge and information sharing in biotech and longevity is far behind the broader tech industry.
We plan to change that with the On Deck Longevity Biotech Fellowship
Earlier this month we published our interview with Celine Halioua (ODF2), Founder and CEO of Loyal, where we discussed how she is developing drugs to extend lifespan—starting with dogs. Apple | Spotify | YouTube (Audio)
One of the key insights Celine touched upon was that knowledge and information sharing in biotech and longevity is far behind the broader tech industry.
We plan to change that.
Yesterday, we announced the On Deck Longevity Biotech Fellowship (ODLB)—a continuous community for people to come together to build, join, or invest in revolutionary longevity biotechnology startups.
Head over to the ODLB page to read more about the program, the founding fellows, speakers and much more.
